In a decisive moment at the Qatar Grand Prix’s sprint race, Max Verstappen secured his third Formula One world championship title, capping off a dominant season. The coronation occurred as Verstappen finished second in the sprint race, with his teammate, Sergio Pérez, crashing out in the 11th lap, eliminating the only challenger for the championship.
Verstappen, who has displayed unparalleled dominance throughout the season with 13 wins in 16 races, needed to finish sixth or above in the sprint race to clinch the title. This remarkable achievement solidifies Verstappen’s status as one of the sport’s greats.
“A fantastic feeling. It’s been an incredible year. Super proud of the job of the team,” Verstappen expressed to Sky Sports. “To be a three-time world champion is just incredible.”
The sprint race in Qatar, held under the lights at the Lusail circuit, saw McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claim victory, adding excitement with three safety cars. Verstappen’s second-place finish was sufficient to secure the championship.
Verstappen’s record-breaking season included a remarkable run of 10 consecutive wins, underlining his absolute authority in the sport. Red Bull’s overall dominance was highlighted by securing their second consecutive constructors’ championship at the Japanese Grand Prix, with six races still remaining in the season.
Team principal Christian Horner praised Verstappen, stating, “Everything that he’s done this year has been phenomenal. He’s the most competitive driver that I’ve ever met. The determination that he drives with, the passion, the heart, the commitment, and, of course, the abundance of skill that he has, he’s up there with the very best.”
With this third title, Verstappen joins the ranks of Formula One legends, including Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Niki Lauda, Nelson Piquet, and Ayrton Senna, as a three-time world champion, further solidifying his place in the annals of the sport.
