Kia Stinger 200Si Full Review

Our Rating

7.8 Good

The Kia Stinger 200Si sits above the entry-level 200S with a starting price of $52,990 plus on roads, $7000 more than the S and $7000 less than the range-topping V6 GT. It has a powerful turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and grippy rear wheel drive ride. However, the jump to the GT is well worth the money.

Rating system explained

Engine

With its 2.0-litre turbo four, the Stinger 200Si offers 182kW (at 6200rpm) and a reasonably healthy 353Nm (from 1400–4000rpm).

The transmission is smooth and seamless in auto mode, however, in ‘manual’ mode, it would automatically upshift leaving the driver annoyed that they could not rev as far as they wanted.

Performance

The 0–100km/h dash is dispatched in 6 seconds flat according to Kia. Sure, not as quick as the 4.9 second claim for the twin-turbo V6 GT, but plenty quick enough and Faster than most hot hatches.

The rear wheel drive forces the car to take corners tightly and the engine sound is somewhat impressive for a 2.0-litre, but we were left still wanting more grunt and pops.

Fuel Economy

Kia claims a frugal 8.8L/100km on the combined cycle.

On our testing, which involved mostly urban driving, the Stinger 200Si quenched its thirst for fuel to the tune of 13.0L/100km. This is quite fair though as Kia claims urban fuel consumption is 12.7L/100km.

Interior & Technology

The list of standard equipment is long. There’s the black leather-appointed interior with eight-way electric adjustment for the driver. An 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with satellite navigation (including 10 years’ MapCare) sits on top of the dash and features Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as DAB+ radio and Bluetooth connectivity.

There are two 12V outlets and two USB charging points, including one for rear-seat passengers. It is a quite luxurious interior, but the red leather of the GT/GT-Line takes the cake as well as its Harman Kardon speaker system that the 200Si is missing.

Safety

The Stinger 200Si scored a five-star ANCAP rating.

As well as the usual airbags, there is autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control. But you’ll need to step into the GT/GT-Line if you want blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera.

Ride & Comfort

The Stinger 200Si is an impressive ride with plenty of grunt and and plenty of space. It does well to grip to the road and its large wheels take the hit for any bumps and ditches.

The Stinger GT does lead in power and torque and thus will provide a more invigorating ride, but this Stinger is still impressive nonetheless.

Warranty & Servicing

Kia offers its class-leading 7 year/unlimited km warranty.

Servicing is every 12 months/10,000km (whichever comes first).

Buyers can prepay the first seven years’ – or 70,000km – scheduled servicing for a total of $3156.

Overall

The Stinger 200Si does well to complete with dull, low powered sedans and SUV’s. It also has enough space to compete with many higher end sedans. However, we can’t help but urge buyers to save the cash and go for the GT as the improvements are well worth the money!
