Possibly one of the most INSANE endings to a motor sport series championship!
Jamie Whincup was the lucky man to take the win at Newcastle along with the championship, but only due to Scott Mcoughlin’s 25-second penalty after an incident with Craig Lowndes.
McLoughlin already received a penalty for speeding in the entry, with dropped him from the lead down to the back end of the firmed. After fighting his way to 12th, he made contact with De Silvestro after fighting for 11th spot which would secure his Championship victory, till another penalty put him further back!
Fighting hard again, Scotty earnt his way back to 11th, only to run wide with two laps to go, causing Lowndes to go in on the inside, making contact and spinning out into the barriers. McLoughlin managed to finish the race in 11th.
However, post race, the stewards handed McLoughlin a controversial 25-second penalty dropping him to 18th and allowing Whincup to take his 7th title!
“I lost my left-hand mirror so early. Obviously I knew we were close but not that close. I just defended the line into (Turn) 2,” McLaughlin explained.
“I genuinely didn’t mean to push him into the wall. To get pinged like that … “
